O Cineasta da Selva

Trilha sonora de Caíto Marcondes e Teco Cardoso
“O Cineasta da Selva” the first Brazilian CD mixed in Dolby Surround While composing the soundtrack for this film by Aurélio Michiles, about the cinema pioneer in Brazil, Silvino Santos, it seemed to us that we were dealing with material that was at the same time rustic and sophisticated, delicate and dense. Just like Silvino’s work, from the beginning of the century, our creation was based on surprise and fascination in the face of the abundance and complexity of the Amazon Forest. Captured with such precision and objectivity by the eyes of this incredible story teller, a potential improviser, with limited technical resources and working inside the hostile environment of the Brazilian forest, these images reveal all the strength of nature and its primitive state. Provided with such inspiring material and based on the musical experience of the beginning of the cinema, we decided to opt for a style that would privilege the impact of a first impression, working on the interactive form over the image of real time and retaining the freshness of impromptus as the raw materials for the final posterior touches. Ever since the first recording sessions, we could feel the potential of the work for the live presentation, sharing with the audience the pleasure of commenting, dialoguing and discussing the reality presented on the screen. Using few elements like percussion (Caíto Marcondes), bamboo flutes (Teco Cardoso) and vocals (Marlui Miranda and Eugenia Melo e Castro) we tried to weave a rare texture sometimes dense and complex in its many rhythms and melodic counterpoints which in its autonomy provided the legitimate format of the CD. In the hope of offering the listener an exquisite ending and knowing that the Companhia de Áudio was undergoing its first experiments with Dolby Surround, we chose this company that immediately fell in love with the freshness and originality of the project receiving us with open arms so that we could realize this dream: make our listener dive into this vast and exciting world with us. Therefore, we became pioneers of this first mixing with Dolby Surround done in Brazil, certainly something new in the concept of listening to music.
