Memory of Brazil Project in the United Kingdom

BRAZILIAN MEMORY PROJECT IN LONDON

Memory of Brazil Project is a cultural project that charts the important musical manifestations existing within the intricacies of the country. By producing concert series, the project unites artists; weaves in historical figures with prominent personalities and musical revelations; and then documents them all in books, CDs and DVDs, thus keeping Brazilian musical history alive by celebrating the diversity of its instruments and segments. While navigating through the site, you will find detailed information about four of the Brazilian Memory Project’s seven phases: Brazilian Violeiros, A Brazilian Wind, Guitars of Brazil and Brazil of the Accordion

In the United Kingdom

The project, which was recommended by Time Out, came to the UK for the first time in November 2009 to present the Ten-String guitar in three packed concerts: at Cafe Oto, in London; at Whitstable and in Cambridge.

In 2010, we are bringing the BRAZILIAN ACCORDION (O Brasil da Sanfona)

The Memory Brazil Project returns to London’s Cafe OTO after the success of their earlier concert featuring the Brazilian ten-string guitar. The new show embarks on a journey to the regions of Brazil where the accordion is rooted in traditional culture and plays a part in the everyday lives of local people. Directed by Myriam Taubkin, the project is the culmination of three years of travel, research, recitals and interviews.

Lula Alencar, a renowned accordionist from northeast Brazil, will perform forró, baião and other regional rhythms, blended with contemporary urban sounds from São Paulo, where he is currently based. Luciano Maia, a virtuoso from southern Brazil, brings local styles such as milonga and chamamé, which also form part of the musical heritage of Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.

Two great musicians will join them in the concert: the renowned percussionist Adriano Adewale, and the talented guitarist Fernando Machado.

In addition to the concert there will be a a short film screening about accordion music in Brazil.
